PACRIM'S LOCAL WEB SITE ABOUT HAWAII RANKS #1 IN JAPAN

Honolulu, Hawaii Hawaii-Arukikata.com, the Hawaii visitor web site owned by Honolulu-based PacRim Marketing Group, Inc., has been ranked the top search engine on Hawaii in Japanese by Google Japan.

The www.hawaii-arukikata.com web site hit 4 million page views for the first time in July and surpassed that with 4.8 million page views in August, said Dave Erdman, president and CEO of PacRim Marketing. This equates to nearly 190,000 people visiting our web site in one month, which is the kind of readership some Japanese Hawaii publications have.

For the past four years, the 1,800-page, interactive web site has consistently ranked in the top listings for the largest search engines on Hawaii in Japanese by Google, Excite, and Yahoo! Japan, but this is the first time it has topped the list, making it the only U.S. based web site on Hawaii to do so.

Started by PacRim Marketing Group four years ago, Hawaii-Arukikata.com is one of the biggest specialized destination travel web sites in Japanese. Since 1999, the Japanese language site from Hawaii has offered a broad range of Hawaii destination travel content, including: daily news updates from all islands, cultural and island history; information on events and activities; maps of beach areas and shopping centers; and daily interviews with Japanese visitors about their vacation experience and spending patterns in Hawaii.

In January, the web site was expanded to include on-line search and selection functions for nearly 2,500 package tours and activities, accommodations, and air ticket options for Hawaii in conjunction with Japanās major travel companies, including JTB (Japan Travel Bureau), KNT (Kinki Nihon Tourist), Nippon Ryoko, R&C, ST World and ANA (All Nippon Airways).

Clients advertising on-line are benefiting as a result of the increased activity on the web site, including e-commerce. Monthly on-line optional tour sales over the past two months increased 250 % over the year prior, going from $20,000 to nearly $70,000 on a monthly basis, Erdman said.

Erdman attributes the increase in visits to the web site to its growth in content and to increasing broadband usage in Japan. From 2002 to 2003, the penetration of broadband in Japan has grown rapidly, from 300,000 subscribers to 500,000 new subscribers, he said. The Japanese are becoming more Internet savvy. More travel decisions include touching the keyboard at some stage of the decision making process than in the past. Hawaii-arukikata.com content is so broad that virtually any on-line question about Hawaii in Japanese will call up the web site.
