  • All Souls Day A day of solemn prayer for all dead persons.
  • Christmas Day The annual festival of the Christian church commemorating Jesus' birth. It is celebrated in the Western Church on December 25.
  • Columbus Day It is a holiday honoring Columbus's landing in the West Indies on Oct. 12, 1492. Observed variously in the U.S. on Oct. 12 or on the second Monday in October.
  • Election Day National elections are held in the U.S. in even years. Any day designated for the election of public officials.
  • Inauguration Day Inauguration Day occurs on 20 January of each 4th year starting from 1965. It applies to the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia, and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia only and is moved to a Monday if it occurs on a Sunday. Holidays occurring on a Saturday are observed on the preceding Friday, those on a Sunday on the Monday following.
  • Independence Day A U.S. holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Also called Fourth of July.
  • Labor Day A legal holiday in the U.S. and Canada observed on the first Monday in September in honor of labor.
  • Martin Luther King Jr Day It is a legal holiday in some states of the U.S., commemorating the birthday (Jan. 15) of Martin Luther King, Jr..
  • Memorial Day A U.S. holiday in remembrance of members of the armed forces killed in war. Formerly, Decoration Day. It is also called Confederate Memorial Day. Any of several days similarly observed in various southern states.
  • New Year's Day It is celebrated as a holiday in many countries.
  • Presidents' Day It is a legal holiday in the U.S., commemorating the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
  • Thanksgiving It is a national holiday celebrated as a day of feasting and giving thanks for divine goodness. Observed on the fourth Thursday of November in the U.S. and on the second Monday of October in Canada.
  • Veterans' Day A legal holiday in the U.S. in commemoration of the end of World War I and in honor of veterans of the armed forces. Formerly, Armistice Day.
