Keep In Mind When Visiting Japan Tips

Time Zone Differences
It is a good idea to always be aware of the date & time differences when doing business with Japan. Japan is 9 hours ahead of the Universal Time (UT). Also, note that Japan does not observe daylight savings time.
Weather
Depending on your destination, the weather in Japan ranges from subarctic temperatures in the north to subtropical temperatures in the south. Check your local newspaper for the temperature (usually Tokyo and Osaka are listed) before leaving for Japan and be sure to pack accordingly. If you travel in the spring and autumn, the weather is beautiful. Winter temperatures average 39' F and summers are often hot, humid, and sticky with temperatures averaging above 80' F. June and July are considered Japan's rainy season, so make sure to pack an umbrella.
Appointments
To be most successful in your meetings in Japan, try to always have an intermediary arrange your appointments with a personal introduction. It is very difficult to see important executives without a proper introduction.
Clothing Attire
Business meetings in Japan require a coat and tie. For women, it is advisable to pack conservative business suits or dresses in black, brown, gray, green, or blue. Make-up should also be conservative. For men, conservative business suits are also recommended. Since most Japanese restaurants require you to remove your shoes, you may want to pack slip-on shoes or loafers for convenience.
Travel
Consider a rail pass for city to city travel. Japan's high-speed trains, called the shinkansen, can often move you from city to city faster and cheaper than flying. Consult your travel agent before leaving on your trip.
Business Cards
It is important to have an ample supply of business cards, called meishi, as their exchange is very important to the Japanese. You might consider a minimum of 25 cards/day. If possible it's a good idea to have your name and address information translated into Japanese on the back of your card. Present your card by holding it with both thumb and forefinger of each hand and with a slight bow. Do the same when accepting a card, and then, be sure to read it before you put it away. You should carry your cards in a high-quality business card case. Important first impressions about you are frequently made at this time of exchanging cards.
